Channel 4 Reports on Metro Detroit Salt Prices

After last year's rough winter, the cost of melting ice & snow is impacting this year's road budgets. MDOT has noted that higher demand for rock salt has increased the price by 50%.

Channel 4 reports that even though end users have signed long term contracts, paying the increased costs, there could still be shortages. The last thing any contractor, big or small, wants is to get caught short like last year. Many have been stockpiling salt since as early as August.

There are no stockpiles this year due to the harsh winter last year, so prices have skyrocketed with some counties paying an increase of 25%, while others are pay over double.

MDOT states that if we have another winter like the last that they could be spending 40 million dollars just in salt. Although they state that they will do everything needed to ensure the roads are safe, there is a possibility that salt may have to be rationed, only salting high traffic lanes, requiring some lanes to be closed.
